Methodology

Artisanal production was an elementary component of pre-modern economic systems. After all, the workshop was an important intersection between the extraction and use of raw materials, be it clay, stone or iron ore. As part of the DFG-Graduiertenkollegs 1878 "Archeology of Pre-Modern Economic Spaces", a complete compilation of the archaeologically certified workshops is created. It is freely available worldwide and thus provides an important research base for further questions and research projects as well as a clear information platform for the economic and everyday life of former societies for the interested public.

Based on relevant publications, the most important information on the workshops, as proven by archaeological finds or findings, is collected in a specially adapted framework of the ARACHNE object database via a standardized vocabulary in order to enable higher-level searches, comparisons and analyzes. The unified delivery of otherwise disseminated, heterogeneous and often difficult-to-access publications significantly simplifies and speeds up the investigation of thematic, chronological or geographical aspects.

The workshops are contextualized in the context of data collection and administration with various technical resources of the German Archaeological Institute and the Cologne Digital Archeology Laboratory, so that further information can be provided, for example, on relevant locations, literature quotations, mineral deposits or transport routes. The project focuses on the Mediterranean in Greek and Roman antiquity, but also includes other cultures (circles) and epochs (from Mesoamerica to China, from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages), which is why the title of "database of antique workshops" was changed to "workshops of pre-modern economic areas". The database is still being supplemented by further workshops - also from other eras, cultures and regions.

Project Structure

The catalog entries were created as Arachne object datasets which were assigned to catalogs according to the type of material groups and the culture groups. Clicking on a folder icon will display any subfolders or records relating to the individual workshops, with detailed information on these structures being accessible directly via the link. In addition, you can always use the magnifying glass icon on the right to show all records that are subordinate to that folder.
In the results view on the second level (reachable by the link above the map "Show all datasets"), the different facets offer the possibility to further filter and combine with each other of the records according to certain criteria (eg, picture(s) available, location, literature, more accurate dating, etc). To go back to the catalogs from a selected data record, click on the link with the corresponding catalog entry.
In addition, you can search for specific terms in the project data records, display all entries of the project or use the cartographic search option of all recorded and georeferenced workshop sites. Furthermore the search option with the map has all available filters for you to use.
